Female Founder Friday: Tracey Garcia

Happy Female Founder Friday ladies! I love having the opportunity to showcase exceptional women entrepreneurs every week, and Tracey Garcia is exceptional indeed. When Tracey and I met, I had wet hair and no makeup on… not the most normal of circumstances. Fortunately, Tracey applied her tremendous talents and had me ready to shoot a professional video in under an hour. I was impressed not only by her skills, but by her calm assurance and ability to talk business as she expertly applied false eyelashes.

Tracey is the cofounder of –StyleMeBar-,  a DC-based company that provides the public and businesses the benefits of beauty “On Demand”, and on time. They incorporate today’s latest digital technologies to help serve the public with the finest Hair and Make-up services in the industry to meet their busy schedules. -StyleMeBar- professionals, and their ability to mobilize quickly to meet demand, is one of the best features of the company.

Ready to be inspired? Any woman who is considering leaving a cushy corporate job for the unknown world of entrepreneurship can learn from Tracey’s journey. Read her forthright answers to my questions below.

What inspired you to create your company?

We live in such a fast pace world and we are all trying to beat the clock. My other Cofounder/CEO Amanda Moran and I have been in the hair and makeup industry for over 20 plus years.  We knew there was a huge demand for this type of business. Along with my husband Joe Garcia, President/COO and the two of us we came up with -StyleMeBar- and we are proud to be in our third year of business. We knew that we were going to build a brand that would stand out from the rest.  We currently have 27 extremely vetted artists on our team that have been handpicked by Amanda and myself. We have exceptional customer service ratings, (nothing but 5 stars across the board) and we take it very seriously. We pride ourselves at being the best in the business and hire only the best. We are an entire salon that comes to you, and we also do large parties and weddings. Our first year in business we did 72 weddings, we doubled that number our second year finishing it with 161 weddings. As of January 2017, we are looking at doubling that 2016 number with 41 weddings in the books thus far.

What was your biggest obstacle and failure in going from idea to business?

Well, I wish we had your book Elegant Entrepreneur beforehand, but never the less…. here we are! Having the idea is one thing but so many variables go into starting your own business. I will never forget my hours on the phone with LegalZoom. Having said that, I have never felt more proud to now understand what it takes to start a company. Just the legal side and logistics were mind blowing. Fast forward to year three, and we now have an attorney that represents our company, as well as a CPA. All three of us have agreed that leaving secure, high paying corporate jobs was the biggest obstacle we faced. Going from a weekly paycheck to starting a new business had its challenges but we are extremely thrilled we took the step. We left in stages, Joe left NBC News first, I followed about six months later leaving Fox News, and Amanda left Fox News shortly after me. We all downsized and adjusted our lifestyles to make this happen and to be a success.

What’s next?

Growth and expansion are in the works with our branding and high level customer service being our top priority.

Please share your best piece of advice for aspiring female founders.

Take a chance. No is not an option. Believe in yourself. Follow your dreams. Dreams come true. Work hard. It’s okay to fail. Learn from your experiences. Set goals. Meet those goals. Don’t burn bridges along the way. Be honest and true to yourself and others. Go for it!!!!!

If you had a theme song what would it be?

“Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” by McFadden & Whitehead. This song has been an all-time favorite of mine for years. It inspires me, it lifts me up, and the lyrics are powerful. -StyleMeBar’s- launch party was in November of 2014, and this was our song. -StyleMeBar- is on the move and we’ve got the groove!!!
